Chapleau is a Northern Ontario community of about 3000 people and is 843 km (523.8 mi.) north of Toronto, 190 km (118 mi.) northeast of Sault Ste. Marie and 272 km (169 mi.) northwest of Sudbury.
Chapleau's history is rooted in the fur trade and the railway. In 1885 CP Rail put a line to access Hudson's Bay Company Trading Post, which led to a series of road access projects.
Chapleau provides access to the world's largest (700,000 ha, which is over 1.7 million acres) Crown nature preserve. The preserve was established in 1925 to protect the area from hunting and trapping, which has allowed for today's excellent wildlife viewing.
Chapleau's activities include hiking, canoeing, cycling, skiing, dog sledding, sledding, wildlife photo tours and more. To learn the most, you can take advantage of guided eco-tours, wilderness outfitters and a variety of accommodations including hotels, motels, resorts bed and breakfasts and campgrounds.
