Historians tell us that the name of the town Gananoque, in the Indian language, means "the place of health" or "the place where water run over the rocks". The Indians, after the long winters in the deep forest, made their way down to the shores where the Gananoque River flows into the St. Lawrence.

By the mid 1800s, the Gananoque River was abundant with factories that depended on water as a prime source of energy. The many parks, waterfront, and historic buildings continue to make Gananoque a summer vacation oasis. It is the prime entrance to the Thousand Islands.

The mighty St. Lawrence River offers an outstanding selection of game fish such as muskellunge (muskie), large and small mouth bass, northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, salmon, and pickerel. An annual 10-day Festival of the Islands is celebrated in August with live entertainment, and displays by local artisans.

Gananoque accommodations include marinas and lodges with boat launching ramps, tourist resorts, and area campgrounds.
