Kenora is located on the eastern shore of Lake of the Woods. An abundance of fur bearing animals and its location on the main east/west water route resulted in Kenora becoming a busy centre for the economy during the fur trading period in the mid 1800s.

The first paper mill was established in 1923. Another mill was built in 2001 to produce Timber Strand thus boosting the economy. Kenora continues to grow economically and culturally, promoting tourism, forestry, mining, and commercial fishing.

A stroll along the greenbelt on the water to McLeod Park provide views of "Husky the Muskie", a tug boat, and the Goodwill Geyser, a huge geyser spouting water every 15 minutes during the summer months. Lake of the Woods Museum was established in 1964 to collect, preserve, research, exhibit, and interpret objects that best illustrate the founding, settlement, and development of this vibrant community.
