In 1970, the communities of Fort William and Port Arthur joined together and formed the city of Thunder Bay. Located about 100 km (about 60 mi.), from Manitoba, Thunder Bay lies on the shores of majestic Lake Superior. Its port is the last stop for ships on the St. Lawrence Seaway where gigantic ships and 15-grain elevators dot the surrounding area.
Over 10,000 years ago, Aboriginals settled in the Thunder Bay region. Ojibwa people make up a significant portion of today's population. European settlers made a positive impact in 1803 as Thunder Bay became the hub of the fur trade, welcoming travelers from Montreal who came to purchase fur pelts from the trappers.
Activities along the recently renovated waterfront offer an unparalleled view of the various islands sprinkled around the shoreline. Art Galleries, museums, parks, and the Thunder Bay Amethyst Mine Panorama are but a few of the intriguing areas of interest.
Thunder Bay accommodation offers a range of hotels, motor inns, bed and breakfasts, and cottages.
