Whitney, a small hamlet on Highway 60, is situated outside the East Gate entrance of the world famous Algonquin Provincial Park established in 1893. Originally logged by pioneers, Algonquin Park's magnificent landscape stretches over 7,725 sq. km (2,983 sq. mi.) of forests, lakes and rivers. Mandated to establish a sanctuary for wildlife and protect the headwaters of major rivers, the importance of this living link to our past is incalculable.
Algonquin Park offers many opportunities to enjoy this pristine wilderness: explore the rugged interior by canoe or on foot; enjoy hiking, swimming, and picnicking while driving the 56 km (35 mi.) route through the Park; camp at one of the four out-of-the-way campgrounds, accessible by car but with no modern conveniences. Visit Algonquin's museums; the Algonquin Logging Museum depicting life in early logging camps; and the Algonquin Visitor's Centre with information and an overview of the Park.
Whitney accommodations and the nearby area include lodges, resorts, motels, inns, cottages and bed and breakfasts.
