Canada’s National Tower

You’ll probably know it better as the CN Tower though it’s fondly referred to as Canada’s National Tower and was originally named after its benefactors, the Canadian National Railway. Either way, the CN Tower is one attraction in Toronto that you can’t miss; in more ways than one!

The CN Tower is iconic – it’s Canada’s equivalent to the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty and us Canadians are very proud of it! It was, after all, the world’s tallest tower for 34 years and remains one of the tallest structures in the world. It’s not just tall though, it’s a feat of engineering and an architectural wonder, and is ranked second place in the World Federation of Great Towers. The CN Tower is also the most visited attraction in Toronto because who wouldn’t want to see those views?

Standing at a total height of 553.33 metres the CN Tower is huge! And while it’s well known as an observation tower it was actually designed first and foremost as a communications tower so that Torontonians could keep receiving TV and radio signals. Toronto was growing quickly in the late 1960s and as the buildings got taller, they needed to find a way to get all the signals across the city without the buildings getting in the way. A vast tower was the best solution, and great for us, they designed one with a restaurant and observation decks too!

The CN Tower was built between 1972 and 1976, and over the years there have been extra attractions added to the interior, to keep it even more interesting for anyone visiting. The latest attraction, though technically it’s not inside, is called EdgeWalk where you can walk around the outside of the main observation pod on a 1.5 metre wide metal floor. This is one attraction that vertigo sufferers will want to avoid, and you do have to pay extra to take part!

What most visitors come for are the two observation decks. There’s the main pod section that actually holds several different floors, including the revolving 360 Restaurant and a caf
