In 1849 Abraham Buck, upon encountering the Saugeen River, determined he had found his new home and set up Buck's Crossing, which was formerly a log-jam bridge but is now the name of a Golf Course.  A large number of German settlers eventually changed the name from Buck's Crossing to Hanover.

The Saugeen River runs through Hanover and touts some of the best canoeing in Ontario. The Saugeen River is good Ontario fishing river with annual trout and salmon runs

South of Hanover, the Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority keeps 2.5 km (1.6 mi.) of nature trails that are used all year round for hiking or cross country skiing.

Hanover is located in Southwestern Ontario and is about 50 km (31 mi.) from Lake Huron and 60 km (37 mi.) to Georgian Bay.

Hanover Ontario accommodations include bed and breakfasts, hotels and motels.
