Located in Perth County, Listowel is in the centre of southwestern Ontario. The first settlers, two tavern keepers and their families, arrived in 1827. Tracts of land were offered to settlers through advertising in the British Isles and Germany, and by the late 1800s, three northern townships were almost completely settled. The urban areas have more recently attracted a mixture of Dutch, Flemish, Swiss, and various other immigrants.

The rural areas continue to be enticing with its prime agricultural land. The townships flourish with mixed farming, dairying, hog production, and world-class cheese and butter factories. Furniture production employs skilled craftsmen whose ancestors immigrated and stimulated the economy of Listowel. In the late 1950s, the automotive industry became a more lucrative alternative.

A recent census indicates the population at approximately 5,900. While this somewhat limits the traveler to a sprinkle of country Inns and campgrounds for Listowel accommodation, a large selection of hotels, motels, Bed and Breakfast Inns, and campgrounds are plentiful in the more populated, surrounding areas.
