The Bluewater Highway (Hwy 21 from Sarnia to Southampton) is thought to be named for the path Blacks traveled on their way to Owen Sound via the Underground Railway during the mid 1800s to this safe haven nestled at the heart of the northern tip of the Niagara escarpment in Grey County on Georgian Bay.
Cultural activities include the famous Summerfolk Music and Craft Festival held annually in August, and the Festival of Northern Lights in mid November to Mid January. The Billy Bishop Heritage Museum, Marine and Rail Museum, Story Book Park, and Art Gallery are busy attractions and the area is a haven for year round sporting activities. You can follow Hwy 26 along the shoreline winding through historical towns until it meets Wiarton, home of the famous Wiarton Willie Annual Groundhog festival held in February. Owen Sound celebrates its150th Birthday with its celebration of Homecoming 2007.
Owen Sound accommodation features hotels, motels, Bed and Breakfasts, and a hotel/convention centre. Georgian Bay affords exquisite views particularly of sunrises.
