Georgian Bay - the ocean within
With the largest natural harbour in Georgian Bay formed by receding glaciers over the rugged Canadian Shield, Parry Sound is today a charming town catering to the tourist industry. Named in honour of Sir William Edward Parry, the Arctic explorer, Parry Sound's magnificent scenery has, for generations, attracted visitors including Canada's Group of Seven artists who immortalized the area with their work. Parry Sound is the birthplace of Bobby Orr, famous Canadian hockey player.
Enjoy a breath-taking tour through the spectacular 30,000 Islands dotting the Georgian Bay coast, or rent a kayak and wander at your leisure throughout these unspoiled islands. Climb Tower Hill, an old fire lookout built in the 1920s for an amazing view of the surrounding forests, lakes and islands. Visit the West Parry Sound District Museum where area history is recreated with exhibits depicting the early trappers, First Nations People, loggers, and farmers. Make sure to attend the Cultural Festival of the Sound in July and August.
Parry Sound accommodations in the area offer a delightful assortment of inns, resorts, and cottages.
