St. Catharines, known as Ontario's Garden City, lies in the heart of the Niagara fruit belt, Canada's largest wine producing region. The City boasts a rich architectural heritage with over 800 designated buildings and homes. The extraordinary Welland Canals, built between 1829 and 1932, brainchild of local entrepreneur William Hamilton Merritt, join Lakes Ontario and Erie. Harriett Tubman, famous conductor on the 1820s Underground Railroad, lived for 10 years in St. Catharines, the final terminus of this route to Canada.
Follow the Ontario Wine Route through St. Catherines for vineyard tours and tastings, and watch huge ocean-going vessels glide through the locks on the Welland Canal. The Canal's Lock 3 Museum provides insight into the canals as well as local history. Visitors can hike, bike, walk, cycle, horseback ride, or rollerblade the wealth of trails and parks surrounding St. Catharines, or golf at one of the 40 or more courses in the area.
St. Catharines accommodations include hotels, motels, and cozy bed and breakfasts.
