Leamington, affectionately known as the Tomato Capital of Canada, was settled in the mid 19th century. In 1907 the H.J. Heinz Company built a factory which is still going strong today, a major producer of Ketchup in Canada.
Visit Colasantis Tropical Gardens, 7 km (4 mi.) west of Leamington. Enjoy a tropical wonderland of exotic plants and birds with a petting zoo, miniature golf and much more. Nearby, on Lake Erie, discover Point Pelee National Park, a birder's paradise. Spring and Fall offer spectacular opportunities to view migrating birds. Marvel at the beautiful Monarch butterflies congregating each autumn as they head for Mexico. Tour Pelee Island Winery's facilities in Kingsville -- just west of Leamington -- where island grown grapes are processed into fine wines.
Leamington accommodations include a number of hotels and motels and the area offers quaint inns, bed and breakfast homes, and summer cottages.
