Southwestern Ontario is the agricultural gemstone of Ontario - where farms
and smaller towns cover the countryside. A selection of tourist areas are
listed below, each with their own distinctive charm and worthy attractions
to check out!
Kitchener Waterloo & Surrounding Area
The "Greenhouse of Ontario", this region is covered in farmlands, and has
a strong Mennonite heritage. Cambridge and Guelph are both not to be missed.
Grab hold of your beer stein! Hosting the largest Oktoberfest outside of
Germany, Kitchener Ontario is a hub of Mennonite and German culture.
The distinctive city of Guelph Ontario is a picturesque spot where flowers
and trees grow alongside the limestone buildings. Home to the University
of Guelph, this city is known for its architecture and natural beauty.
The Cambridge Ontario area lets you view
the banks of the Grand and Speed rivers along the 10.5 km (6.5 mi.) stretch of the
Trans-Canada trail. Activities along the trail include canoeing, hiking,
fishing, horseback riding and others. The African Lion Safari is a must for
children as well as the young-at-heart, where you will see exotic birds,
lions, tigers, zebras, elephants and monkeys as you drive through the 'jungle'.
Hamilton
This is a not-to-be-missed stop on the route to Niagara Falls Canada! Although
it has a strong industrial history, the beauty and abundance of quality attractions
will surprise you!
Hamilton flourished in the 20th Century when the steel, automobile and home appliance industries took rise, and these industries are still the stronghold of the city. Home to McMaster University, Hamilton Ontario provides opportunity to explore many other activities, including golf, sailing, hiking, museums, and shopping.
Port Dover & Long Point
Discover marshlands, cattails, and nature running wild in this region. The
sounds of nature at the stunning pale-sand beaches are soothing and breathtaking.
Along the beautiful shores of Lake Erie, this area is a haven for the nature-lover.
Lively beaches can be found at several points along the shore where white
sand, parks, shops, restaurants, and boats are part of the landscape.
London & Surrounding Area
A major Iroquois center, discover the culture first-hand in museums and
interactive villages.
London Ontario proudly displays its British roots, with its city name, street
names, and even with its own River Thames running through it. It is primarily
a commercial and industrial center, however are an unusual number of parks
and trees that make it a lovely place to visit and live. While staying in
a London Ontario hotel, you can discover the history of the city, which includes
a very strong Iroquois cultural aspect. Museums and attractions are of a
very high quality and give visitors an insight into this fascinating tribe
of Native American Indians.
Windsor & Surrounding Area
Industrial Windsor boasts a colourful history with its nearby US border.
Windsor Ontario is primarily a manufacturing centre, with an astoundingly
impressive output, even exceeding that of some provinces. It is situated
in a relatively temperate climate, however, and the surrounding area is known
- in contrast - for its agricultural abundance. The city is linked to Detroit,
Michigan by both a tunnel and bridge, and some say that the most beautiful
thing about the city is its view of the Detroit skyline (which is apparently
quite breathtaking). The University of Windsor offers a special focus on
automotive, environmental and social justice research, reflecting the priorities
of the region. Point Peelee National Park, along the shore of Lake Erie,
is covered in marshland, and parks, where you can run wild with the wildlife,
birds and butterflies.
Stratford & Surrounding Area
British roots shine through in the world-renowned Stratford Shakespeare
Festival, and the swans of the Avon river.
Stratford Ontario is another city in whose British roots shine through,
since its early settlers brought their love of Shakespeare with them! In
1953 the Stratford Festival was created, and it is now the third largest
Shakespeare festival in the world, hosting more than 100,000 people each
season. Book a Stratford Ontario hotel online, and be a part of the magic
that the city of Stratford has created with its festival. The Avon River
runs through the city of Stratford Ontario, with a number of famous swans
(who have inherited a 'keeper' in recent years, hired by the city!). The
downtown is quaint and the people are noted to be very friendly.
